Website Linking Strategies

J. Walker Author of Website Linking Strategies

"First of all, it is very important to fully understand my position when it come to using only Ethical Search Engine Optimization techniques. That same code of ethics carries over into each and every method that I teach to members of my free SEO Training Class. It really comes down to doing what you know is right."

5 Simple Steps to Ethical Linking Strategies

Part of building a successful online business, involves developing a solid approach to your website linking strategies. This can be broken down into five simple steps.

  1. Never keep all of your eggs in one basket. This applies to all aspects of your business, and to the linking strategies you choose to use. You should be using every possible ethical source of increasing NATURAL LINKING to your site.

  2. There are no QUICK MAGICAL ANSWERS to building a solid base of natural incoming links to your site. It depends entirely on good old fashioned hard work. Stop looking for ways to find programs, or methods that will give you hundreds of incoming links overnight.
    • "Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links." Google Guidelines
    • "Linking schemes do not increase a given site's PageRank, and will often do a site more harm than good. Many sites that advertise link-sharing programs not only offer little value, but will distribute your email address without your permission, resulting in an increased volume of unwanted mail to you." Google Facts & Fiction
  3. Many of you have seen the ads offering to sell you incoming links from sites with high PR. What these sites forget to mention to you is that it goes completely against Google Guidelines. They likely also do not mention to you how many sites have ended up totally banned in Google for using this very unethical practice, over the last year.
  4. When linking to OTHERS, do not use automated programs that prevent them from receiving "credit" for the incoming link. Hold your cursor over the link and look down in the status bar. If anything but their link is showing (ie: longer url's) you are not using a program that benefits them. If you felt that the site was a benefit to your visitors, then give the site owner full credit, where credit is due.
  5. Once again, it all comes back to doing what is right. Never choose to exchange links for the sole purpose of increasing your PageRank. If you choose to link to a company, do so because you TRULY BELIEVE you are providing a resource to your site visitors that will benefit them.

The fastest way to increase natural incoming links, is to provide people with something they WANT to link to. Provide the kind of site that they WANT to tell their site visitors about. (articles, free services, quality content, quality blogs, etc.) Once you are doing this, you can easily ask people to consider linking to your site.

Ethical Search Engine Optimization

J. Walker Author of Ethical Search Engine Optimization

If you have spent any time at all researching search engine optimization, you're already aware of the ethical vs. unethical SEO techniques debate. No matter which direction you turn, EVERYONE seems to have a different opinion on what is and acceptable. What is ethical search engine optimization?

How do you know if you are using ethical SEO techniques? How does a small business owner sort it all out so they can help insure that their site will do well in the search engines? Is it a matter of, "All is fair in love and war"? Are there search engine "gods" who will punish me if I unknowingly make the wrong decisions?

For me, there was never a debate. I define ethical by doing what's right, and by playing by the "rules" of the game. When I am in doubt as to what is acceptable, I simply refer to Google Information for Webmasters. I don't know if this is the RIGHT way to optimize a site, but I do know that following the guidelines has never let me down.

There are those who say that it's not possible to "win" in the search engines without using the so called unethical techniques. They say that the most competitive keywords will go to those who are willing to do "whatever" it takes to place in the top 3 and that those who "go by the rules" only stand a chance in the "niche phrases"

Let me ask you a question... Why would you want to compete with 15 million people for the keyword "widgets", if you only sell "red widgets"? Wouldn't it make far more sense to place well in the search engines for "red widgets"?

See, I don't think the key to success on the internet is receiving thousands of daily hits on your site. I think the key is receiving "targeted" hits on your site. When someone visits my site, I want it to be because I provide exactly what they are looking for.

That means I simply have to find my "niche" and then target "specific" traffic to my site. This is easily accomplished by choosing and following a set of basic SEO Techniques.

Google’s Supplemental Index

The Big Daddy update of late 2005 to early 2006 was largely about installing a new Supplemental index. The new version is so different to the old version that it shouldn’t now be called the Supplemental index. The old Supplemental index was a repository for garbage webpages and such, and was accessed for the search results only when a reasonable number of results couldn’t be found in the regular index. The new version is very different because many millions of perfectly good pages are put in it.

Many, perhaps most, websites have plenty of their pages in the Supplemental index because their linkage profiles don’t score well enough. Even Google has pages in there - hundreds of thousand of them. A site’s linkage profile is an evaluation of the links into and out of the site. Things like linking to off-topic sites, and too high a percentage of a site’s inbound links being reciprocals, lowers the score of a site’s linkage profile, and reduces the number of pages that it can have in the Regular index, which means that more of its pages are placed in the Supplemental index. Improving the linkage profile brings pages out of the Supplemental index and into the Regular one.

Before Big Daddy, pages in the Supplemental index had been given the kiss of death - they rarely came out, and were rarely seen in the search results. But that has changed, and is continuing to change. It is now possible to bring pages out of the Supplemental index by getting some good links to the site, and the continued improvement is in the way that the Supplemental index is used by Google’s system.

Right now, most of the datacenters are using the new Supplemental index in the same way as the old one was used; i.e. get a results set from the Regular index and, if the set isn’t large enough, add to it from the Supplemental index. The quality of the results from the Regular index doesn’t come into it. If the results set is large enough, the Supplemental index is ignored.

But at least one datacenter operates differently. It operates along the lines of, get a results set from the Regular index. Sometimes many of those results will be poor quality matches (e.g. they only match one word of a three word query), so get some better matches from the Supplemental index. The use of the Supplemental index in a way something like this is likely to spread across the datacenters in 2007.

The new way makes a lot of sense. Since many of the results that are acquired from the Regular index are often poor matches for the query, and since millions of perfectly good pages are now stored in the Supplemental index, some of which will be good matches for many queries, it makes good sense to pull results from the Supplemental index when there are some poor matches from the Regular index.

It’s good news for website owners who have large numbers of pages in the Supplemental index. As the new way of operating spreads, more of their pages will rightly find their way into the search results, even though they are in the Supplemental index.

Digging Deeper with Keyword Research

Ann Smarty just wrote a real smart (I know the puns corny but I couldn’t resist!) post about comprehensive keywords analysis. There she outlined some ways that will help you do a more in depth keywords analysis sans the usual keyword research tools.

Some of the tools she mentioned included”

  • Dictionaries;
  • Lexicons;
  • Twitter search; and
  • Synonym listing tools such as Google Adwords External and Synonym.com.

In the post she described how each tool can be used to come up with a more comprehensive list of keywords that will make for richer content.

Obviously this type of keywords research is only for those that are really committed to learning more about their own content AND doing the best possible SEO job. The great thing about this is that you will not only be relying on popular user data but will actually be learning about the words meaning, synonyms, and context. Due to the exhaustive nature of the research Ann does not advice that you do this for each and every keyword you wish to target but only for the core keywords in your site, the ones that you have already deemed to be most important.

In the end even if you do not end up optimising your site at least you’ll be smarter with all those words and their origin crammed in your head.

Top Strategies To Make Your Blog Successful

This post is the third and last part in a series and continuation of my last post. A new blog or website or even an old website without traffic is completely lost. Traffic is life stream of any website and a reason of its survival . But biggest question is, from where we can get traffic for our blog? In our daily life we do our best to avoid traffics in roads. But as a webmaster we just want to hit by traffics, get tangled, scrambled and surrounded by it. But it is not easy. It takes times and dedication and a great deal of efforts. Its a step by step and a long process.

There was a time in my internet marketing career, when I used to believe that visitors will come to my website immediately, after I publish my website. I created my website and left it alone to get traffic by itself. But luckily that thinking was long way back in 2003.

Here is the techniques I have used to promote all my websites and have given me a good result. Use this technique on your risk, because after using all this methods your website is going to be hit and bombarded by traffic from all directions :)

11) Optimizing Your Blog For Search Engines

If you want to improve the search rankings of keywords of your blog, you must know how to optimize contents of your blog. Optimizing techniques are simple, can be done by anyone and it wont cost you anything. You have to just spend few minutes to optimize your blog, but its benefits will be long lasting. Here is what I would recommend highly:

i) PermaLinks or URL structure - Default permalink structure in wordpress is “http//www.yourdomainname.com/?=x“, which is not SEO friendly and will mess entire link structure. To change this structure you must go to setting area of wordpress and select permalink settings and choose custom structure and fill it with “/%postname%“. After changes, your blog permalink structure will generate a URL similar to “http//www.yourdomainname.com/posttitle”

Many bloggers include category also in their permalink (%category%/%postname%), so they might benefit from keywords in category as it is part of their URL structure. But I prefer keeping my URL short which is better looking, easy to remember and also easily crawled by search engines robots.

ii) All in One SEO Plugin - One of best plugin in wordpress which help you to tweak and optimize your blog. You can easily tweak title, keywords and description for every posts and pages manually. If you don’t want to do it manually you can let plugin to do it and it will automatically optimize your title, meta keywords and descriptions for you.

iii) Use Keywords Rich Title and Post - You can benefit and boost your organic search result traffic by writing posts on keywords which is performing well in various search engines. I am using HitTail service. They observe my search hits in real time and provide me with writing suggestion for useful keywords which I can include in next post title to rank high in search engines.

iv) Headings, Alt tags and text links - You must try to use HI and H2 headings and may include few keywords in it. Also, for graphics use “alt” tags and “title” tag on text links. Use most important keywords in these tags, for better optimization for search engines.

v) Sitemaps- Majority of bloggers make a big mistake of not having a sitemap in their blog. For wordpress there are many plugins available to create sitemap without any know-how. XML Sitemap Generator plugin has worked well for me and it automatically notifies Google, Yahoo and MSN, for any updates in my blog. Other blogging platforms like bloggers can use xml-sitemaps.com to create their sitemap for free and then manually submit it to Google by joining Google Webmasters tools.

12) Marketing and Promoting Your Blog:

i) Search Engines: In my last post, I have already mentioned how to get your site indexed in Google under 24 hours. Actually to get indexed in Google in 24 hours, you need a website with very high page rank linking to your blog or website. I have already mentioned these sites with high PR, so make sure you check my last post.

Submit to search engine directories

Here is guidelines, you must follow when you are submitting to search engine directories:

* Directory should have high Page Rank.

* Use your main keywords on the backlinks, that will point to your website.

* Many directories have “no follow” tag, which means your submission on such directories will not result in any backlinks. So be sure that directories you are submitting allows follow tag.

* Before submitting to any human edited search directories, make sure that all links in your blog are working, otherwise it will result in rejection of your application.

Here is list of free directories where you can submit your blog (PR= Page Rank):

Addsitelink.com (PR 2)

Arakne-links.com (PR 4)

Blog-search.com (PR 3)

Also, don’t forget you will also be getting instant traffic from readers who will visit this site to read articles and will visit your website by clicking links in your author bio box. iii) Commenting on other blogs

No doubt this is one of the best strategy to get quality backlinks and traffic to your blog. But many bloggers are unaware with a fact, that they are not getting any backlinks from most of blogs they are commenting because of “no-follow” tag in comments. If you are just commenting to get backlinks for your blog, then you should need to select only blogs who allows “follow tag” in their comments. Best way to find this, is to install “NoDoFollow” plugin in firefox, which will highlight all links with “no-follow” tag as red and all links with “follow” tag as blue, which would be a extremely helpful to distinguishing a blog with such tags.

iv) Forums

Find forums in same niche as yours, read the posts, respond and participate actively and also make new threads about special offers and services provided by you. Again don’t forget to put your blog URL in your bio as a signature. Also, many forums now allows blogs to put XML feed as signature, so it would be a great help in bringing lots of traffic. You can check big-boards.com, they have lots of forums listed in their directory.

v) RSS feed directories:

You can get tons of traffic by submitting your feed to various RSS directories. But for best result you need to submit your feed to maximum of RSS feed directories. There are hundreds of them. Here is few where you can submit your feed right now:

http://1800rssfeeds.com

http://feeds4all.com

http://readablog.com

http://rss-feeds-submission.com

http://weblogalot.com/Ping

http://yourfeeds.com/Submit-RSS.aspx

vi) Link Exchange:

You can see how many website links, I have already listed here in this page. It means when any of my readers click on any of these links and go to the website listed above, these websites are getting traffic. They are getting this privilege because they have good page rank and great contents and useful services. So if your website has good contents people will give links to your website automatically, without you asking them to do so. With useful stuffs and resources in your site, you will soon find that your visitors will promote and link to your website without you even asking them or even lifting your fingers.

But initially when you start your website, you need to build backlinks. All the above techniques that I have mentioned will give quality backlinks to your websites. Apart from this you can use Gotlinks.com and freerelevantlinks.com to build your backlinks manually with other blogs or websites in similar niche as yours .

vii) Video Submission:

This is one of the best way to get fast traffic to your blog or website. Even simple videos created with help of camtasia or Windows movie maker, can get you hundreds of visitors per day from youtube and other related sites. You can use tubemogul.com, to get your video submitted in 12 sites at once.

viii) Social Bookmarking Sites:

For me bookmarking my blog post after publishing is like a ritual habit, which should be followed without a miss to please myself and which helps me to get peaceful night sleep. So why it so important for me to bookmark it to such sites. Well it certainly brings good traffic, help me to get indexed in various search engines and certainly I want to impress Google so they can bestow their grace of giving me good page rank to my new blog in their next PR update. Here is some bookmarking sites which will work wonders for you. So have a nice happy time bookmarking your blog.

digg.com (my personal favourite)

de.lirio.us

del.icio.us

Jumptags

Furl

Propeller

Mixx

Twitter

Technorati

Spurl

But a word of caution, all these techniques will work only if you have a great quality contents for your visitors. If you don’t have value contents for your visitors, you are wasting your time. Visitors will never be loyal and will leave your blog as quickly as they came.

Content is truly a king, but still King needs a support of his soldiers (promotion) to win the battle. Neither one of them will survive if they work alone without supporting each other.

Search engine optimization

Search engine optimization(SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

The acronym "SEO" can also refer to "search engine optimizers," a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term "search engine friendly" may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.

Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or Spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that degrade both the relevance of search results and the user-experience of search engines. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques in order to remove them from their indices.

What is SEO?

SEO is the process of a web page that can be read with a better search engine by a crawler (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.). SEO process can involve a web page itself, but does not close the possibility of also involving the other website.

Not all of the website be properly by search engines. Website that use the full flash at all at this time can not be read properly by search engines, while the website will meet the W3C standard can be read perfectly by search engines. Search engines will also be difficult to read the web using JavaScript and web navigation with the frame.

Many factors that determine success in SEO. In addition, the method for search engines to index the search results are often changed. Therefore, the SEO can be said is very dynamic because the method changed from time to time, and also the SEO can not guarantee whether your website will appear in the top of the search index or not. Please see the article - an article about SEO in this website and start generate traffic from search engines. Cheers!
